Road Trip Etchings

About the Road Trip Etchings

While living out west, I made a practice of sketching my view from the passenger seat of the car on long road trips. I loved the extreme landscape that emerged dramatically from flat desert valleys. You could see approaching formations for miles before passing them. Even a simple line of fencing seemed high impact on the expansive views of the desert. There’s a lot more to see in this hilly, tree-filled Vermont landscape and I’ve had to increase my sketching speed to capture it, but I like the immediacy of the sketches. I cull the drawings and make etchings from them on an encaustic (beeswax and resin) ground.Â
